POETRY SLAM SEMIFINALS RECAP

On the evening of February 22, poets and the public alike gathered in the MLK Library to attend the very first Legacy of Poetry Slam. We celebrated migration and diaspora to honor the hardships and celebrate the journeys taken by immigrants and refugees worldwide. Many performers embraced the opportunity to speak out for social change including our emcee Max Voshall who opened the evening by sharing a slam poem of his own. Also, the Poets & Writers Coalition (PWC) at SJSU and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) both held an informational booth at the event in support of our celebration of migration and diaspora.

Our judges for the night were:

  • SJSU alumni and poet Lara Gularte

  • Poet and SJSU professor David Perez and

  • Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Mighty Mike McGee.

And without further due, here are the 8 finalists who will be performing at the Legacy of Poetry Slam Finals, March 22 from 6-8:30 at the SJSU Student Union Auditorium. Congratulations to all!

  • Alan Baez, “Gil Scott Heron”

  • Mila Le, “Broken Vietnamese”

  • Isaiah Beltran, “I’ve Seen”

  • Mira Mustafa, “Eye of the Storm"

  • Jonathan Ginez, “I Came Here On a Boat”
